Critical Tunnels Transforming Jammu-Poonch Highway Connectivity
The Jammu-Poonch National Highway is undergoing a significant transformation, with the construction of two vital tunnels under the supervision of the Border Road Organisation (BRO). These tunnels, the ‘Kandi Tunnel’ and the ‘Sungal Tunnel,’ represent essential infrastructure developments that promise to enhance road connectivity and reduce travel distances between key destinations.
The first of these tunnels, the ‘Kandi Tunnel,’ is a noteworthy engineering feat. Stretching over 260 meters in length, this tunnel marks a remarkable achievement by the BRO. The tunnel construction commenced in March 2023, a project that has persevered through adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and landslides along the entire road stretch. Despite these challenges, the ‘Kandi Tunnel’ managed to achieve its breakthrough ahead of schedule, a testament to the exceptional expertise and determination of the BRO team.
Moreover, the ‘Kandi Tunnel’ plays a crucial role in enhancing strategic connectivity for the Armed Forces, facilitating smoother and more expedient movement from Jammu to Poonch. The Border Road Organisation remains committed to the timely and successful execution of all projects, and the completion of the ‘Kandi Tunnel’ exemplifies their dedication to improving transportation infrastructure for the nation.
The second tunnel, the ‘Sungal Tunnel,’ is equally significant. This nearly 3-kilometer-long tunnel is currently under construction at Chowki Choura in Jammu. Upon completion, it will dramatically reduce the distance between Akhnoor and Sunderbani on Jammu-Poonch National Highway by ten kilometers. The ‘Sungal Tunnel’ promises to provide substantial benefits to travellers, particularly those who frequently commute between Jammu and Rajouri districts.
The ‘Sungal Tunnel’ is constructed on the lines of the renowned Chenani-Nashri tunnel in Udhampur on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The BRO is overseeing this project, with a total cost of Rs 500 crore. This tunnel will eliminate the need to traverse hilly and curvy roads, significantly reducing travel time between Akhnoor and key destinations like Chowki Choura and Bhambla.
Currently, the journey from Akhnoor to Chowki Choura takes 30 to 40 minutes, while reaching Bhambla requires around one hour. With the ‘Sungal Tunnel’ set to be commissioned by January 2024, travel times will be reduced to 25 to 30 minutes for these destinations, offering a substantial improvement in road connectivity.
Simultaneously, construction is underway for the ‘Kandi Tunnel,’ which will connect to Nonath and further to Chowki Choura. Both projects are progressing at a rapid pace and are expected to be completed by the end of this year or by January 2024.
These tunnel projects on the Jammu-Poonch National Highway signify a remarkable stride in infrastructure development. They not only reduce travel distances but also promise to make transportation more efficient and reliable for both civilian and military use.
